Sunscreen Guide: How I Learned to Choose, Apply, and Love Sun Protection

When I first started my skincare journey, I honestly underestimated sunscreen. For years, I thought it was just for the beach or sunny vacations. But after reading research papers and dermatology blogs (like those from the American Academy of Dermatology), I realized sunscreen is the backbone of any skincare routine.

If you’ve already read my [Ultimate Skincare Guide: Everything You Need for Healthy, Glowing Skin], you know sunscreen isn’t optional—it’s non-negotiable. In this post, I’ll share how I personally figured out the science, mistakes I made, and tips that finally helped me pick the right sunscreen.

Why Sunscreen Is the True Skincare Hero

I used to believe moisturizers and serums were enough. But the truth is: without sunscreen, all other products lose their power. For example, vitamin C serum works on brightening, but UV rays can undo that work in minutes.

What sunscreen does for your skin:

Shields from UVA rays (aging, pigmentation, wrinkles).

Protects against UVB rays (burning, tanning, skin cancer).

Prevents premature aging, fine lines, and dullness.

Helps active ingredients (like vitamin C, retinol, niacinamide) actually deliver results.

Sunscreen shields your skin from UV rays, but pairing it with vitamin C adds that extra brightening boost. If you want to know how vitamin C tackles pigmentation, check out my detailed blog on Vitamin C serum for pigmentation and glowing skin.

Understanding SPF and PA Ratings

When I first saw SPF numbers, I was confused. Is SPF 50 always better than SPF 30? Do I really need PA+++? After some trial and error (and skin redness 😅), I figured it out.

SPF (Sun Protection Factor): Measures UVB protection. SPF 30 blocks ~97% UVB rays; SPF 50 blocks ~98%. The difference is smaller than I imagined.

PA rating: (from Japanese/Korean systems) tells UVA protection. PA+++ is good, PA++++ is excellent.

Broad-spectrum sunscreen: Covers both UVA and UVB — this is the one you should always choose.

👉 What I use: SPF 50 PA++++ broad-spectrum sunscreen for daily use because I stay out during coaching hours and travel often.

Chemical vs. Mineral Sunscreen: My Experience

When I first tried sunscreen, I hated the greasy feeling and white cast. Later I discovered the difference:

Mineral sunscreen (physical filters): Contains zinc oxide, titanium dioxide. Great for sensitive skin, but can leave a white cast.

Chemical sunscreen: Uses ingredients like avobenzone, octocrylene. Lightweight, blends easily, but may irritate some skin types.

Hybrid sunscreens: Mix of both, best of both worlds.

After testing several, I personally prefer hybrid sunscreens — lightweight, no white cast, but still protective.

How I Apply Sunscreen (And Mistakes I Made)

I used to apply just a pea-sized amount of sunscreen. Wrong! Dermatologists recommend the two-finger rule — squeeze sunscreen along your index and middle finger, then apply evenly.

My sunscreen routine now:

1. Cleanse and moisturize skin.

2. Apply vitamin C serum (in the morning).

3. Wait 2 minutes, then apply sunscreen generously.

4. Reapply every 2–3 hours when outdoors.

✨ Pro tip: Pairing vitamin C and sunscreen is a power duo. Vitamin C neutralizes free radicals while sunscreen blocks UV — together they give maximum protection.

Sunscreen and Skin Types: What I Learned

At first, I thought sunscreen was “one-size-fits-all.” Nope. My skin leaned towards combination (oily T-zone, dry cheeks), so I had to experiment.

Oily skin: Gel-based, mattifying sunscreens work best. (Keyword: best sunscreen for oily acne-prone skin)

Dry skin: Cream-based or hydrating sunscreens with ceramides or hyaluronic acid.

Sensitive skin: Mineral sunscreens, fragrance-free.

Acne-prone skin: Non-comedogenic, oil-free formulas.

I wasted money before learning this, but now I check labels carefully.

Sunscreen in Different Weather & Places

I once skipped sunscreen in winter, thinking clouds block UV rays. Huge mistake! UV rays penetrate clouds, glass, and even indoors through windows.

Summer: High SPF, water-resistant sunscreen.

Winter: Lightweight sunscreen with hydration.

Rainy season: Water/sweat-resistant sunscreen.

Indoors: SPF 30 is enough, but don’t skip it.

Common Myths I Believed (But No More!)

1. “I don’t need sunscreen indoors.” Wrong. UVA penetrates windows.

2. “Darker skin doesn’t need sunscreen.” Melanin helps but does not fully protect. Hyperpigmentation worsens without sunscreen.

3. “Makeup with SPF is enough.” It’s not—you’d need 7 layers of foundation to match actual sunscreen coverage!

My Top Sunscreen Hacks

Apply sunscreen on neck, ears, and hands — not just face.

Always layer sunscreen after moisturizer but before makeup.

Carry a sunscreen stick or spray for easy reapplication on the go.

Reapply sunscreen even if it’s cloudy.

Wrapping It Up

Sunscreen isn’t just a skincare step—it’s a lifestyle choice. I’ve seen how consistent use has kept my skin healthier, brighter, and free from tanning. Honestly, if I could go back and give my teenage self advice, it would be: “Never skip sunscreen.”
